Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, echoing the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
