Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a crucial Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," said the player following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club chase trophies to come.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said following the success at Manchester.
