The people of Israel observe two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have come together around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader remarked on that day.
He also promised to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities postponed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' delegations convened in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the agreement.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the discussions indicated that an late session of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The official stated the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, because of differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "challenging and have still not deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Essential Points in Talks
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Post-war management of the territory
Public Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "No place appears as home any longer and until every captive come back not a single person will be secure."
"Once we see all home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can start to recover," she added.
Outside the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their support for the families of the captives. Israel reports 48 continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.
Activist a participant explained: "We need do any agreement needed for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that around seventy percent of the population desire the war to finish in exchange for the release of the hostages.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the area of the gathering, grieving people gathered to honor the dead.
From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of that day in the western district, Rimal and zone areas and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the evening arrives, the fear comes with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.
"My family are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my youngest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will return to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
