The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Campy Joy – However It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

A freshly coined acronym emerged a few months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is found only in Gaza, as stated by medical experts including paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for physicians to treat a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about scores of doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are still being committed. Officials has denied these claims, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is accused of. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, it seems, is what international harmony manifests as.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from participating in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems completely different.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost

The contest turns 70 next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of someone in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A competition that was originally built on togetherness has transformed into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
