Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities issued surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
