British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
