The award-nominated actor Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran has died at the age of 89.

This star, with roles featured Chinatown, died at her home in Ojai, California. Her passing was revealed through a message from her daughter, award-winning actress her daughter Laura Dern.

Her daughter, who performed alongside her mother in various films including Rambling Rose, called her “my incredible hero as well as my profound gift of a mother”, noting that she was at her bedside during her final moments.

“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, star, artist as well as empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she expressed. “We were blessed to have her. She is now with the angels.”

Initial Roles and Breakthrough

The start of her career featured small roles in TV shows including The Fugitive and the seventies saw her starring with actor Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.

During that year, 1974, she appeared with actress Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese acclaimed dramatic comedy Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. The performance landed Ladd an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress.

Subsequent Years

Throughout the 1980s, she was seen in the dramatic film Black Widow, a suspense story as well as funny follow-up National Lampoon’s holiday comedy and also took part in the show Alice, a television series based on her earlier movie.

During the next ten years, she was given an additional best supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her performance in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart, a cult classic in which she portrayed the parent of her actual daughter Dern’s character. The next year she received an additional nod for her performance in Rambling Rose, another movie which included Laura Dern.

“This was the film which Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she invited me and Laura to the UK for a royal premiere and a celebration in our honor,” Ladd said about the film Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, holding both our hands, with tears, viewing our performance.”

The 1990s featured performances in the comedy Cemetery Club, a film bringing her back with Ellen Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political comedy, with John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne Citizen Ruth where she played the mother of Dern again. That period also brought her Emmy nominations for performances on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Collaborations with Daughter

She kept appearing with her daughter in dramatic comedies the film Daddy and Them, Lynch’s Inland Empire, a surreal film and White’s satirical show Enlightened, a TV series. She was also seen next to actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Sir Anthony Hopkins in that movie and with Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Her more recent television parts featured Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon.

Writing and Directing

Ladd also wrote and helmed the comedy film Mrs Munck, a film that included Diane Ladd and former husband actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she mentioned. “I was honored to direct him in a movie. Actually, I stand as the only woman ever to direct her ex-husband. I humorously say: ‘I advise females, should you desire retribution, helm a movie with your ex.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Personal Life

She happened to be the third cousin of the great Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a significant impact on my life”.

In 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with lung disease and told she had just six months to live yet she recovered completely once her daughter transferred her to a new hospital.

“When you use your pain and avoid letting it accumulate like a sore or something, instead apply it to investigate, to clarify the journey for yourself and others, then you are succeeding,” Ladd expressed.
