A extensive search and rescue effort is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for two missing sailboats transporting aid cargo en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Military Rescue Operations Initiated

The Mexican government has dispatched navy personnel and military search aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were had on board a minimum of 9 crew members, per a navy statement.

The vessels had been scheduled to arrive in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their arrival, authorities reported.

Context of Aid to the Island

The island nation has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through repeated nationwide blackouts.

"Both crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and emergency beacons," a spokesperson associated with the mission said.

The nine-person crew are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is working closely with the officials and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Previous Humanitarian Delivery

Previously that week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had delivered a significant amount of donated goods to the island.

That ship, called "Granma 2.0" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro landed in Cuba to begin the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, medicines, formula milk, cycles and provisions.

Larger Geopolitical Climate

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba since January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50,000 operations cancelled in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Political pressure have been ramped up lately, with comments from several leaders emphasizing the complicated situation regarding bilateral relations.

Reacting to previous proposals, a senior official from Cuba stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of talks had begun, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to locate the boats and ensure the security of the crews.

As of now, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
